Tucked away in the small surfer town of Brunswick Heads in New South Wales, Australia, the owners of this 1957 bungalow were looking to transform their home into a contemporary beach getaway. While the goal of the renovation was largely to modernize the home, TBL’s design intent was to maintain some of the key characteristics of the 1950’s bungalow.

  • The living room opens onto a newly constructed deck, creating an elongated living and entertainment space. With an indoor / outdoor bar serving as one of the main focal points in the home. The dropped ceiling in the kitchen was removed to expose the vaulted ceiling, and make the space feel larger. An outdoor shower was provided at the end of the deck to allow guests to rinse off from their surf session as they return from the beach nearby.

"This 1957 beach house has been redesigned to evoke the sunny nostalgia of summer holidays of the past."
