Jan Dierckx is the waffle alchemist. Apprenticing in waffle making in his native Belgium, he has turned Nero Waffles into a innovative dining destination in Vancouver. The overall atmosphere of the space was derived from the distinctive Belgian cafe and bar spaces. Warm glossy wood textures, a rich Yves Klein Blue paint colour, white mosaic tiles and elegant brass accents create an energetic and vibrant restaurant.

  • Communal seating cutting through the centre of the space with a linear custom light fixture overlooks an open kitchen where waffles are prepared with a sense of theatricality.

The cafe’s east perimeter is lined with booths for two or four where cantilevered tables and sloping ceilings create a space that feels private and intimate. These are always the first choice for confessing a love of savoury or sweet waffles.

On the back wall a wall of waffled recycled leather provides a visual accent for the space. Blackened steel counters and espresso machines have been created by another form of alchemy. Finally, a vintage glass and chrome display case stands adjacent to the entry provides an indication of the taste sensations to come.
