Brewery

Superflux Beer Company

When Matt and Adam (co-owners of Superflux Beer) found the Budget Press building, it seemed well suited to their vision for Superflux. The modest concrete block street-front on Clark Drive quietly concealed the double-height manufacturing space, with its steel columns, massive timber beam frame, and rhythmic timber joists.  Wired glass windows in battered steel frames, situated up high on the walls, illuminate the interior with natural light during the day, while maintaining limiting views into the space from the exterior. These found elements provided the raw material for the design of the new Superflux Brewery.

  • Also important was the air of mystery associated with the existing building.  A visitor would not immediately recognize the space as a brewery whilst walking or driving by on busy Clark Drive.  Yet once a patron is drawn into the space, they encounter an immersive design language. One that is characterized by sinuous curves, unfolding perspectives and the subtle play of light and shadow; all the while exhibiting views of the brewing operations from various points in the lounge. At Superflux, considerable design attention was invested in how to create a layout with a diversity of seating types and heights that foster conversations. Adam and Matt were interested in creating a warm, refined and inviting space that contrasted and yet complemented the stainless steel, concrete and bright spaces of the manufacturing functions.

In keeping with the emphasis on craft, local artists and craftspeople from the nearby 1000 Parker Street Studios were engaged to collaboratively work with the contractor (Harmony Pacific Projects) and designers on how to bring the curving design elements to life. The neutral colour and material palettes and mirrored surfaces allow light, shadow and reflection to significantly transform the brewery throughout the day. Superflux has become not only the place to drink delicious, experimental beers, but a place for observing and experiencing an ever-changing space.
