Located in the Shipyards District in North Vancouver, La Cerveceria Astilleros is a Mexican-inspired microbrewery located on the thriving North Vancouver Brewery Row. Similar to the adobe dwellings of Mexico, this existing industrial space was deeply embedded in the sloping topography of Lower Lonsdale with limited access to natural light. The new design applied a plaster finishes to existing walls so that the heavy architectural expression of the space was maintained while adding white tile, ash wood, and colourful fabrics to create a bright inviting space.

  • The new design brings in traditional Mexican design and architectural elements utilizing clay roof tiles as screens and arched alcoves for display. The primary finish element in the microbrewery is the handcrafted blue talavera tile. The traditional Mexican tile contrasts with the warm terracotta tones from the upholstery and roof tiles. The main design feature is the booth seating covered by a canopy, which makes reference to outdoor Mexican patios. A linear arrangement of plants draws your eye into the deep space and provides a natural trellis to the space. This compact 187 m2 microbrewery is flexible and innovative. The window counter flips-up to allow for deliveries to come in through the front overhead doors, and the booths contain additional storage within the seating.
